Claude Debussy – “La Fille Aux Cheveux de Lin, Prelude for Piano, L. 125/8

Composed in 1910

Claude Debussy is probably my favorite classical composer. Simply put, he just had beautiful melodies which I adore. This is one of a number of Debussy compositions which I performed as part of a college guitar ensemble.  I’ve had great affection for it since.  While we had a guitar arrangement, it is typically a piano composition.  This is a much more simplistic composition than Debussy was known for at the time, but it is prized for its delicacy. The title is translated to “The Girl With the Flaxen Hair”, though I’ve read that Debussy didn’t care for using such concrete descriptive titles, it had been added by his publisher.  He also didn’t care for another title, that of his music being described as “Impressionistic”, a classical subgenre in which he and Maurice Ravel are considered the principle composers.  The Impressionist era of music helped bridge the gap between 19th century Romanticism and 20th century modernism.
