Happy Earth Day!

The Song of the Day is:

Lil Dicky – “Earth”

Released as a charity single in 2019

What up, world? It’s your boy, just one of the guys down here
Well, I could be more specific
Uh, I’m a human, and I just wanted to, you know
For the sake of all of us earthlings out there
Just wanted to say:

We love the Earth, it is our planet
We love the Earth, it is our home
We love the Earth, it is our planet
We love the Earth, it is our home

Benjamin Levin – David Burd – Jamil Chammas – Josh Coleman – Magnus August Høiberg

Junior absolutely loves this video, and luckily there is an edited version of it. He’s definitely seen the unedited version, but I’m glad that there is a more “appropriate” version. I had actually never heard of Lil Dicky until a couple of months ago, when my wife and Junior put this video on for me. This was released last year as an Earth Day benefit, I’m not exactly sure that it had a big effect considering not Spin Magazine and Pitchfork panned the single. I mean, it is kind of weird hearing a plea for the benefit of the planet that includes drug and sex references. But that’s just Lil Dicky’s absurdist style, and it’s certainly not for everyone. He did manage to recruit an impressive all-star lineup for his charity benefit, including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Zac Brown, Brendon Urie, Hailee Steinfeld, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Adam Levine, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth, Sia, Miley Cyrus, Lil Jon, Rita Ora, Miguel, Katy Perry, Lil Yachty, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, Joel Embiid, Tory Lanez, John Legend, PSY, Bad Bunny, Kris Wu, Backstreet Boys, and Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio leads the environmental foundation that this song benefits. Lil Dicky, whose name is actually Dave Burd, emerged on the rap scene via YouTube in 2011. His raps are usually comedic and self-effacing. The year prior to this song, he had a body switching viral video hit with Chris Brown called “Freaky Friday”. He’s released one video so far, 2015’s Professional Rapper and is currently leading an FX comedy series based on a fictional version of himself, called simply Dave.
