Janet Jackson – “That’s The Way Love Goes”

From the album janet. (1993)

One of the most tossed about names lately for a deserved induction is Janet Jackson, and I say it is time for her to join her brothers in the institution.  Janet became one of the world’s biggest pop stars in the world in the mid-eighties following the release of her album Control.  1989’s Rhythm Nation 1814 made her an absolute legend.  At nearly thirty years later that album is still insanely listenable, props to her longtime producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.  When the good Jackson name got besmirched in the early nineties, janet. launched six top ten singles and made her the sweetheart of the family.  Guess who big brother Michael enlisted for his first post-scandal single?  That’s right, Michael and Janet’s long awaited collaboration “Scream” became one of the most iconic videos of the nineties as the siblings danced in unison.  Janet finished the decade strong with an album that Rolling Stone magazine included in their top 500 albums of all time list, The Velvet Rope.  She’s had less popular influence after the millennium as she has seen scandal and has started a family.  She’s been nominated twice since becoming eligible in 2007, so why has she not been inducted yet?  Well, the statistics of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s populous will show that her gender and race do put her at a disadvantage, not to mention that she is viewed more as a pop singer than a rock singer, there is probably a simpler explanation: Nipplegate.

It’s time to get over it.

Janet has many great dance songs, this is her best slow groove.
