Salt-n-Pepa – “Shoop”

From the album Very Necessary (1993)

Eventually, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will have to induct its first female hip hop act, and since Salt-n-Pepa has not yet been considered, it looks like the smart money may be on Missy Elliott.  That would really be a shame though, as Salt-n-Pepa entered the men’s arena back in 1987 with the undeniable classic “Push It”.  While they were never not talking about sex, in the early 1990’s they got woke with their AIDS Awareness anthem “Let’s Talk About Sex”.  Then in 1993 they fully entered the mainstream with their album Very Necessary.  Lead single “Shoop” brought an un-ironic doo-wop influence to hip hop along with rhymes that are still quotable a quarter century later.  Salt-n-Pepa, and their equally important DJ, Spinderella, were omnipresent on MTV during these years.  Their next single “Whatta Man”, featuring the R&B Vocal group En Vogue, helped Salt-n-Pepa sell seven million copies of Very Necessary.  It’s now been twenty years since the world has seen a new Salt-n-Pepa album, but the group has been featured on reality television and still tours.
