Was (Not Was) – “Walk the Dinosaur”

From the album What Up, Dog? (1987)

*K’s Pick

Here’s on odd little funk tune from the 1980’s.  “Walk the Dinosaur” is a dance song with a music video that featured cavepeople and prehistoric imagery, but was actually about nuclear Armageddon.  Perhaps, its best though not to dig too deep into its meaning.  This was actually the biggest hit that Was (Not Was) ever had, but their legacy doesn’t stop there.  Bandleader and bass player Don Was (aka Don Fagenson) is very important and well travelled individual in the music business.  He plays session bass guitar for many acts, but is also a well respected producer too, having worked on albums by The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stone Temple Pilots, Waylon Jennings, Carly Simon, The B-52’s, Bob Dylan, and many more.  He is currently the president for the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records.  Don Was’ band mate “brother”, David Was (Weiss) also became a record producer and has worked with k.d. lang, Roy Orbison and also Bob Dylan.  “Walk the Dinosaur” has been covered by Queen Latifah and George Clinton.  In 2008, Was (Not Was) released their latest album after an 18 year hiatus.
