Audrey Hepburn – “Moon River”

From the soundtrack to the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

This very famous song, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Henry Mancini, has become a standard.  It has been performed many times over, and it is also one of the signature songs of the late Andy Williams.  Perhaps the most delicate reading of it was from the starring actress of the film which this song derives, Audrey Hepburn.  Hepburn was a screen legend, and though she’s had more acclaimed roles (Oscar for Best Actress in 1954 for Roman Holiday, for instance), her performance as Holly Golighty in this Truman Capote-penned classic is her most iconic role. This song went on to be awarded Grammys and an Oscar. The instrumental version that plays over the films credits features harmonica legend Toots Thielemans.
