The Allman Brothers Band – “Midnight Rider”

Today we say goodbye to Allman Brothers Band drummer, Butch Trucks (1947-2017).  Trucks was one of two drummers in the band Jai Johanny Johanson, or “Jaimoe”.  Both drummers were original members, but while Jaimoe was absent for a few early 1980’s albums, Trucks was present through every incarnation of the band.  To put it simply, Trucks was known to lay down the traditional rock groove beat, while Jaimoe would add jazz flourishes.  Trucks’ nephews are also famous musicians: Derek Trucks is a sometimes-guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band as well as leading the Tedeschi Trucks Band with his wife Susan Tedeschi, and Duane Trucks is a drummer for Widespread Panic.

*Update – It has been confirmed that Butch Trucks committed suicide.

On the day my son turned two (12/3/16), I began playing him a song everyday. There are no rules or limitations on the songs, sometimes its pertinent to life, events or anniversaries, and sometimes its just random. It is an experiment, a hobby, and a daily excuse to bond.
